Cambridgeshire is a mainly rural county, and many D/deaf, deafened and Deafblind people are living in isolated areas. Peterborough has a multicultural population and for many BME D/deaf people, English is a second or even third language. The impact of being D/deaf is also isolating, communication is hard enough for those with a mild hearing loss, let alone those with a profound loss. Many D/deaf people are unable to communicate their wishes effectively and understand what is going on around them.
Advocacy plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of abuse, isolation, anxiety and other factors that trigger mental health problems. We are looking for volunteers who have a few hours to spare to support our clients with basic everyday issues.
So.........
